Nothing derails game day like discovering a missing shin guard at the field. A bag packed the night before keeps things calm. Here's what to have in it — plus a routine to make sure nothing's forgotten.
The essentials
- Boots (cleats): matched to the surface. Not sure what to buy? See our cleats guide.
- Shin guards: required by most leagues. Our Mini Shin Guards are light and low-profile.
- Socks: team socks, plus grip socks to keep your feet locked in.
- Water bottle: full, and part-frozen in summer.
- Your ball: correct size and properly inflated.

For goalkeepers
- Gloves: our Goalkeeper Gloves or the Fingersave pair.
- A small towel to keep your gloves and hands dry.
Weather extras
- A warm layer for cold mornings and a rain jacket if the forecast looks iffy.
- A cap and sunscreen for hot, sunny games.
- A change of dry clothes for after a wet or muddy match.
Food and drink
- A light snack before: a banana or a cereal bar an hour before kickoff for steady energy.
- Water, not just sports drinks: hydrate through the day, not only at the game.
- A recovery snack for after: something with carbs and protein helps you bounce back.
The little things
- A spare pair of socks.
- Any tape or sleeves you use to hold shin guards in place.
- Plasters or a small first-aid kit for blisters and scrapes.
- Hair ties, if needed.
A simple routine
Pack the night before and keep the non-perishables (guards, socks, gloves, tape) in the bag permanently. Then you're only adding water, snacks, and boots on the day. A quick habit: run through the list — boots, guards, socks, ball, water — out loud before you leave. Five seconds now saves a scramble at the field.
After the game
Empty damp kit out of the bag when you get home rather than leaving it to fester. Air out the boots, hang up the socks and guards, and refill the water bottle so it's ready for next time.
